Célibataire 038 | Young Man with Wavy Hair and Patterned Tie | Framed Matte Canvas

A wave of brown hair and a patterned blue necktie give this early twentieth-century portrait its distinctive character. Célibataire 038 presents a young man looking slightly away from the camera, reproduced from a digitally restored and colorized historical photograph on framed matte canvas.

His finely striped jacket, pale turned-down collar, and loosely gathered necktie bring texture and detail to the composition. The plain, warm-toned background surrounds his face, while the softly fading lower edges allow the tailoring to recede gently into the backdrop.

The supplied photograph record estimates the original to circa 1905–1915 and identifies the studio as White & Brown of Avoca, New York, based on the original mount’s printed credit. The sitter’s name and personal history are not documented.

This photograph is part of the Walt & Pete® Célibataire Collection, a series of restored historical portraits featuring individual male subjects in studio and outdoor settings. Through clothing, expression, posture, and composition, these photographs preserve distinctive moments of individual presence. Presented for contemporary collectors, including the LGBTQ+ community, they invite reflection on visibility, belonging, and historical male portraiture. The collection’s name refers to one man pictured; it does not establish his relationship status or sexuality.
