Missing Art Studies - 1776 | paire 001 - At the Harbor of Alliance
Portrait No. 001 of 250

Created to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the United States, Companions of Liberty is an evolving collection of 250 historically inspired portraits honoring the diverse individuals and communities whose lives were intertwined with the American Revolution. Drawing upon surviving uniforms, military records, period artwork, archaeological evidence, and contemporary scholarship, each composition is crafted with meticulous attention to historical detail while embracing the visual language of late eighteenth-century portraiture.

More than a celebration of military history, Companions of Liberty seeks to illuminate the human stories often overlooked in traditional narratives. The series portrays Continental soldiers, French allies, Black patriots, Native American allies, veterans, officers, and civilians with dignity and historical authenticity, highlighting moments of resilience, service, friendship, and quiet humanity.

Standing along a busy colonial waterfront, two uniformed Black soldiers are depicted in conversation before a moored sailing vessel flying a white Bourbon naval ensign decorated with golden fleurs-de-lis. Their white military coats with blue facings, cocked hats, leather equipment, sidearms, and carefully rendered textiles reflect documented elements associated with French forces serving in North America during the Revolutionary era. Behind them, fellow troops gather near a timber warehouse while church spires and waterfront buildings rise across the harbor.

The composition emphasizes the maritime setting that connected France's expeditionary forces with American allies. Fine architectural details, dockside barrels, rigging, and weathered timbers combine with the warm patina and craquelure of an eighteenth-century-inspired oil painting to evoke the atmosphere of a bustling wartime port without depicting a specific documented event.

Preserving overlooked stories from the Revolutionary era broadens our understanding of the people who contributed to the struggle for independence. By recognizing the presence of Black servicemen and the multinational character of the Allied war effort, works such as this encourage viewers to engage more deeply with the complexity, diversity, and shared sacrifices that shaped the founding generation.
