Portrait No. 149 of 250

The Companions of Liberty collection by Walt & Pete® is a museum-inspired series of 250 historically informed portraits created to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Through careful historical research and fine-art interpretation, the collection celebrates the diverse individuals, quiet acts of service, and enduring contributions that shaped the American Revolution. As part of Walt & Pete®'s broader mission to preserve and share LGBTQ History, Gay History, and Queer History, the collection also highlights historically significant individuals whose lives continue to inspire thoughtful scholarship, while remaining faithful to documented evidence.

By the winter of 1781–1783, Baron Friedrich Wilhelm von Steuben had become one of the Continental Army's most influential officers. As Inspector General, he transformed Washington's army through standardized drill, discipline, and organization, publishing the landmark Regulations for the Order and Discipline of the Troops of the United States, commonly known as the "Blue Book." His work helped convert a developing citizen army into a more professional fighting force capable of sustaining the final campaigns of the Revolution.

Working beside him were two of his most trusted aides, Benjamin Walker and William North. Walker served as von Steuben's secretary and aide-de-camp, preparing correspondence, copying orders, and assisting with military administration. North likewise served as an aide-de-camp and later became a respected military officer, lawyer, and public servant. Both men remained lifelong friends of von Steuben after the war, acting as executors of his estate and helping preserve his legacy. Historians continue to study the close personal relationships among these three men, but this artwork depicts only their well-documented professional service and enduring friendship without drawing conclusions beyond the historical record.

The portrait shows the officers gathered around a campaign table inside a modest Continental Army headquarters illuminated by candlelight and the warmth of a stone fireplace. Maps, correspondence, leather-bound volumes, writing instruments, and a well-used copy of Steuben's military regulations emphasize the intellectual labor that supported the Continental Army beyond the battlefield.

Rendered in the style of an eighteenth-century American oil painting, the composition combines historically researched uniforms, period architecture, muted colonial pigments, and museum-inspired conservation techniques to evoke the atmosphere of an original Revolutionary-era portrait.

Why These Stories Matter

The American Revolution depended not only on battlefield courage but also on the leadership, planning, organization, and daily administrative work carried out behind the front lines. Preserving these quieter stories broadens our understanding of America's founding generation while recognizing individuals whose contributions often receive less attention than those of combat commanders. Through historically grounded artwork, Walt & Pete® encourages collectors to explore the many people and experiences that shaped the nation's beginnings.
