With just a few tables, soft lighting and a welcoming atmosphere, the Fire Island Monster quickly attracted guests from across the island.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs its reputation grew, Scialo expanded the restaurant, hired additional staff and introduced live piano music during dinner. Meals were followed by communal sing-alongs at the rear piano bar, sometimes continuing until three in the morning. Frankie “Piano,” Bobby Pico and Vernon Larsen were among the musicians who helped establish the tradition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Monster became one of Fire Island’s most fashionable dining destinations. Guests reportedly included Tennessee Williams, Bette Midler, Ethel Merman, Tommy Tune, Jerry Herman, Mel Brooks, Anne Bancroft and other figures from theater, film and New York society. Its famously extravagant lobster-and-steak entrée was appropriately called the “Monster.”\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs the 1970s arrived, the establishment developed another personality. Elegant dinners and piano-bar sing-alongs gave way to afternoon Tea Dances and late-night disco. The front dance room became known as Green Lips, where beachgoers could arrive in bathing suits and dance on a floor still carrying sand from the shore.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Monster eventually encompassed several experiences under one roof: sophisticated dining, cocktails, piano music, cabaret,, community contests and a pounding dance floor. It became a destination where visitors from Cherry Grove, the Pines and communities across Fire Island could gather.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eScialo later expanded the Monster concept to Key West in 1975 and Manhattan’s Sheridan Square in 1982. He sold the Cherry Grove establishment during the 1980s, and the Fire Island property subsequently operated under several different names, including the Tides. Although the original Fire Island Monster is gone, its combination of hospitality, music and uninhibited LGBTQ+ nightlife remains an important part of Cherry Grove history.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Front Design\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe front is conceived as if it had been commissioned directly from a New York commercial artist in 1969. A completely original sea-griffin rises from simplified Great South Bay waves beneath a burnt-orange sun.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe creature is constructed from bold, interlocking shapes rather than detailed modern illustration. Softly psychedelic lettering, avocado green, warm cream and burnt orange reflect the visual language of late-1960s restaurant identities, travel posters and early screen-printed apparel.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe words “The Fire Island Monster,” “Cherry Grove” and “Est. 1969” complete the compact emblem. The artwork does not reproduce the surviving Monster logo or its carousel-inspired sea serpent.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe Back Design\u003c\/strong\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe oversized back graphic captures the Monster’s evolution from supper club to disco through the visual language of 1969.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eLarge, hand-drawn “Green Lips” lettering dominates the design. A simplified grand piano anchors the composition while its keyboard bends into an exaggerated psychedelic curve. A geometric cocktail glass recalls the restaurant and piano-bar experience, while a faceted dance light and musical notes anticipate the energy that would eventually define Green Lips.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAt the bottom, stylized Great South Bay waves surround a pair of green lips formed through negative space. “Piano Bar • Dining • Disco,” “Green Lips at the Monster,” and “Cherry Grove • Fire Island” bring the venue’s different personalities together in one original composition.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe limited palette, broad shapes and intentionally
