The Meaning of the Mopane Wreath

Mopane, Colophospermum mopane, provides the botanical inspiration for this artwork. Its native range includes Malawi, grounding the design in the country’s plant life.

Within this design, the butterfly-like paired leaflets suggest transformation and possibility. Their joined forms represent connection—the support that allows individuality to flourish. Flattened seedpods symbolize future growth, while woody branches express continuity through changing seasons.

Two branches cross at the base and sweep outward and upward into an open ceremonial crown. Here, the laurel form expresses honor and dignity, recognizing identities and experiences that deserve to be valued.

The Pride Colors

The Meaning of “KUNYADA”

Kunyada means “to be proud” in Chichewa, as recorded in the Chinyanja–English dictionary compiled by Father Jan Vermeullen.
