The Mocambo design honors one of Seattle’s most important early LGBTQ gathering places. Located at 203 Yesler Way in Pioneer Square, the Mocambo opened in 1951 and became a central nightlife space for gay men from the 1950s through the late 1970s. 

Before Capitol Hill became Seattle’s best-known LGBTQ neighborhood, Pioneer Square helped shape the city’s public queer life. The Mocambo, also known as “The Mo,” was part restaurant, part cocktail bar, and part community hub — remembered as a place where LGBTQ patrons gathered, socialized, organized, and built visibility. Seattle historical records note that gay political and business groups met there beginning in the 1960s. 

This shirt features a front Mocambo logo and a back anniversary brunch invite, both inspired by historical artifacts. The bee motif, vintage cocktail trays, worn paper texture, and mid-century typography give the artwork the feeling of preserved ephemera from Seattle’s early queer nightlife scene.
