A dark-haired sailor kisses the cheek of a smiling companion while his arm rests around the other man’s shoulders. The photograph is offered as framed matte canvas wall art.

The white caps, pale shirts, and dark neckerchiefs are consistent with twentieth-century naval dress. A precise date, nationality, location, and original photographic format cannot be established from the supplied restored image alone. The photograph is tentatively placed in the mid-twentieth century, circa 1940–1950.

The sailor on the right turns toward the other man and presses his lips against his cheek. The sailor on the left smiles broadly. A forearm lies across his shoulders, and a hand holds the forearm near his chest. Both wear white naval-style shirts and caps with dark neckerchiefs. A plain, warm-gray background and a narrow dark lower border focus attention on the figures. The image shown is colorized; its palette is not evidence of the original print’s colors.

The close composition makes a striking addition to a study, bedroom, library, or collected gallery wall. The visible kiss may be described without claiming a particular relationship or sexual identity. Walt & Pete® presents the photograph within a wider context of male companionship and queer visual culture.

Companion Photograph

In the companion portrait, Paire 156, the dark-haired sailor appears on the left and kisses the lighter-haired sailor on the cheek.
