The Meaning of the Damask Rose Wreath

The design draws inspiration from the Damask rose cultivation and associated craftsmanship of Al-Mrah near Damascus. UNESCO inscribed these practices on its Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2019.

Within this artwork, layered rose petals represent memories that gather depth over time. Thorned stems suggest protection and boundaries, while buds and rosehips express renewal and the possibility of carrying stories forward.

Two branches cross at the base and sweep upward into an open ceremonial crown. Here, the laurel form expresses honor and recognition. The ivory ribbon joins the branches as a symbol of care and shared support.

Living Memory describes the artwork’s chosen theme: traditions remain meaningful through the people who tend, practice, and reinterpret them.

The Meaning of “فخر”

فخر, transliterated as fakhr, means pride in Arabic. The word can carry different shades of meaning depending on context.

Within this design, فخر expresses positive pride in identity, heritage, and community. It affirms self-respect and the value of the experiences each person carries.

The original Arabic lettering appears once on the ivory ribbon, preserving its connected letterforms and right-to-left reading direction.

The Pride Colors

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet appear throughout selected blossoms, buds, foliage, and rosehips. Layered pink roses remain the visual foundation, supported by natural green leaves and warm stem tones.

Clearly distinguishable blue and violet complete the Pride palette. These additional flower colors are an intentional artistic interpretation that brings LGBTQ+ visibility into the wreath.

The Artwork

Inspired by late-19th-century hand-colored botanical plates, the illustration combines fine engraved linework, watercolor variation, matte painted details, and restrained archival texture.

Layered petals, visible thorns, serrated leaves, and rounded rosehips give the wreath its botanical character. An open center and softly folded ribbon preserve a balanced laurel silhouette.
