The Company of Remarkable Men No. 001 — Harvey Milk | LGBTQ+ History T-Shirt

Harvey Milk transformed visibility into political representation. Elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in November 1977, he became the first openly gay man elected to public office in California. His victory demonstrated that an openly gay candidate could build a broad coalition, represent an entire community, and earn a place within American civic life.

During his time in office, Milk championed San Francisco’s landmark 1978 Human Rights Ordinance. The measure prohibited discrimination based on sexual orientation in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Milk also played an instrumental role in defeating California Proposition 6—the Briggs Initiative—which sought to prohibit gay and lesbian people from working in the state’s public schools.

Milk understood that LGBTQ+ visibility could challenge prejudice and give isolated people evidence that they were not alone. His public career lasted less than a year, ending when he and Mayor George Moscone were assassinated at San Francisco City Hall on November 27, 1978. His influence nevertheless continued across generations, and he was posthumously awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2009.
