After dinner, its tables were removed, and the bare wooden floor became a dance floor. Mirrors, blue Plexiglas columns and rows of chasing lights transformed the rustic restaurant into one of Fire Island’s most influential gay dance clubs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Sandpiper eventually installed an advanced Graebar sound system with Technics turntables, a Bozak mixer and a dedicated lighting booth. Its musical history included influential DJs such as Tom Moulton, Tom Savarese, Richie Rivera, Barry Lederer and Robbie Leslie. Leslie began working at the Sandpiper before launching a celebrated career that would take him to The Saint, Studio 54, 12 West, Palladium and other legendary nightclubs.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAlthough deeply loved, the Sandpiper had never been designed to contain the increasingly powerful sound of disco. Music-related disputes with neighboring residents became part of the club’s later history.
