Zimbabwean Flame Lily Kudada Pride T-Shirt | Shona Laurel Wreath Tee

The Zimbabwean Flame Lily Kudada Pride T-Shirt celebrates Courage—the strength to grow, express oneself, and remain visible through adversity.

Inspired by Zimbabwe’s national flower, Gloriosa superba, the design transforms slender climbing stems, curling tendrils, buds, and dramatically recurved petals into an open laurel-style crown. An ivory ribbon binds the crossed stems and carries KUDADA, a Shona expression associated with being proud or taking pride.

The artwork connects Zimbabwean botanical heritage with LGBTQ+ identity through a celebration of individuality, transformation, and belonging.

The Meaning of the Flame Lily Wreath

The flame lily’s red-and-yellow petals curl upward and backward, creating a striking silhouette that resembles rising flames. In this artwork, that movement becomes a symbol of courage: the determination to emerge, grow, and express one’s identity.

Slender stems and curling tendrils suggest persistence and connection. Unopened buds represent possibilities still unfolding, while open flowers express the confidence to become visible.

Two botanical branches cross at the lower center and sweep upward into a ceremonial crown. Within this design, the laurel form represents honor, dignity, and the achievement of remaining true to oneself.

The ivory ribbon ties the branches together as a symbol of shared belonging. It brings connection to a wreath whose theme is personal courage.

The Pride Colors

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet appear throughout the flowers, buds, and foliage. Red-and-yellow blossoms honor the flame lily’s characteristic coloring, while green leaves provide a natural foundation.

Blue and violet flowers introduce clearly distinguishable Pride accents. These additional hues are an intentional artistic interpretation, preserving the flower’s recognizable form while expressing LGBTQ+ visibility.

Together, the six colors create an energetic crown celebrating the many identities and experiences within the community.

The Meaning of “KUDADA”

In Shona, kudada conveys being proud or taking pride. Its meaning depends on context; within this design, it expresses the positive pride of valuing one’s identity, heritage, community, and lived experience.

KUDADA is used here as an affirmation of self-respect—the right to recognize one’s worth and live without shame.

Placed on the ivory ribbon where the stems meet, the word connects individual courage with shared belonging. Substantial charcoal lettering gives the affirmation a clear presence beneath the botanical crown.

The Artwork

Inspired by late-19th-century hand-colored botanical plates, the illustration combines fine engraved linework, watercolor variation, matte painted detail, and restrained archival texture.

Wavy petals, exposed stamens, delicate leaf veins, and curling tendrils give the wreath a lively, handmade character. The open interior and softly folded ribbon preserve its ceremonial silhouette.
