Behind him, six men gather closely on the grass, their hats and shoulders creating a varied line against the trees. Hommes 005 presents this restored historical photograph as framed matte canvas, bringing its layered composition and outdoor setting into the contemporary home.

Tailored jackets, waistcoats, high white collars, and neckties give the portrait its historical character. Straw boater-style hats appear alongside felt hats and a soft cap, offering a varied record of dress. The clothing fits an early twentieth-century setting, although the original date and location remain undocumented.

Several arms rest across neighboring shoulders. The foreground man supports his head with one hand, while others sit with bent knees or legs extended toward the camera. A substantial tree trunk anchors the group, with further trees, grass, and a distant fence giving depth to the setting. Muted greens, browns, and dark blues distinguish the supplied restored version.

The combination of formal clothing and informal arrangement gives the photograph its particular appeal. Its horizontal composition suits a study, living room, or gallery wall, where the varied hats, gestures, and overlapping figures reward close viewing. Paired with studio portraits, it offers a contrast in setting and pose.

Part of the Walt & Pete® Hommes | Vintage Portraits of Men Collection, this restored historical photograph brings the visual culture of men into the contemporary home. Across studio portraits, workplaces, and everyday settings, the collection attends to clothing, gestures, the arrangement of a group, and the character of a place. Presented within Walt & Pete®’s broader LGBTQ+ archival mission, these photographs invite close looking while respecting the limits of what is known about the people pictured.

Original Photograph Record

Title: Seven Young Men Reclining Beneath Trees in Park Setting

Date (estimated): circa 1910–1920

The estimated date is based on visible clothing and styling. The men wear tailored suits with narrow lapels, high-buttoned stances, and straight-cut trousers, consistent with early-twentieth-century fashion. Several individuals wear straw boaters and soft felt hats, popular in the 1910s. Hairstyles are short and neatly parted, with smooth, close-cropped sides typical of the period before the widespread adoption of later 1920s styles. The informal outdoor leisure setting fits vernacular photography of the 1910–1920 decade.

Photographer:
