Hommes 006 presents a restored historical photograph of men dancing and playing string instruments, reproduced on framed matte canvas for the contemporary home.

Identified as American Signal Corps men at Monmouth Park, New Jersey, in 1917, the group offers a glimpse of recreation during First World War camp life. Uniform shirts, lower-leg coverings, and campaign hats establish the period setting; the instruments and dancing give the image its particular character.

Six men occupy the foreground. Four stand in two dancing pairs, while two sit at the right with string instruments. One dancer faces away from the camera; others turn their faces toward their companions or the photographer. Behind them, tent ropes cross the open ground, linking the figures to the architecture of the camp.

In a study, living room, or gallery wall, the horizontal composition offers both structure and animation. Muted olive clothing and pale tent fabric lend the restored image a restrained palette, while the arrangement of hands, instruments, and faces rewards a closer look.

This restored historical photograph brings men's visual culture into the contemporary home. The collection attends to clothing, gestures, objects, and settings that give each image its presence. Presented within Walt & Pete®’s broader LGBTQ+ archival mission, these photographs invite close looking while respecting the limits of what is known about the people pictured.

Forgotten Moments, Forever Remembered.

Original Photograph Record

Title: American Signal Corps Men Dancing and Playing String Instruments at Monmouth Park (descriptive title)

Date: 1917, according to the supplied identification; previously estimated circa 1917–1925 from visual evidence

Photographer: Unknown

Place of Production: Monmouth Park, New Jersey, according to the supplied identification

Original Photo – Condition & Preservation Status

The supplied restored digital reproduction does not allow assessment of the original physical photograph's condition.
