Two branches cross at the base and rise into an open ceremonial crown, bound with an ivory ribbon bearing OKWENYUMIRIZA.

Together, the botanical imagery and Luganda wording connect Ugandan heritage with LGBTQ+ Pride, self-respect, and belonging.

The Meaning of the Mutuba Fig

The mutuba tree, Ficus natalensis, holds a meaningful connection to Uganda’s traditional barkcloth craft, particularly among the Baganda people of Buganda. Its inner bark is carefully harvested and beaten with wooden mallets to create a soft cloth with a characteristic terracotta color.

This relationship between tree and craft inspires the wreath’s theme. Within the artwork, textured branches represent knowledge preserved through practice. Broad leaves suggest growth and continuity, while the figs symbolize the possibilities carried into future generations.

“Living Heritage” expresses the idea that heritage continues through the people who practice, remember, and reinterpret it.

The Meaning of the Laurel Wreath

The crossed branches sweep upward into an open laurel-style crown, a ceremonial form associated with honor and achievement. Here, the wreath expresses dignity: the value of one’s identity, the knowledge inherited from others, and the courage to carry both forward.

The ivory ribbon binds the branches together as a symbol of connection and shared belonging. Its natural placement at the crossed stems brings the design’s message of Pride to the point where separate branches become one composition.

The Pride Colors

Red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and violet appear throughout the illustrated figs and foliage. Natural green leaves and warm bark tones anchor the palette, while the colorful fruit introduces the full six-color Pride spectrum.

These hues are intentional artistic accents rather than a claim about the tree’s natural fruit colors. Distributed throughout the wreath, they express LGBTQ+ visibility while preserving the botanical character of the design.

The Meaning of “OKWENYUMIRIZA”

Ok wenyumiriza is not the intended spelling; the ribbon correctly presents the word as OKWENYUMIRIZA.

In Luganda, okwenyumiriza conveys being proud or taking pride in oneself or something valued. In this design, it expresses pride in identity, heritage, community, and lived experience.

The word is used here as a personal affirmation of self-respect and LGBTQ+ belonging. Its placement on the ivory ribbon connects that affirmation with the wreath’s wider theme: identity sustained through cultural knowledge, connection, and continuity.

The Artwork

Inspired by late-19th-century hand-colored botanical plates, the illustration combines fine engraved linework, watercolor variation, matte painted detail, and restrained archival texture.

Visible leaf veins, weathered bark, rounded figs, and softly folded fabric give the artwork a historic, handmade character. Deep charcoal lettering remains clear against the ivory ribbon, allowing one coordinated design to accompany both light and dark garment colors.

Why You’ll Love It

Features OKWENYUMIRIZA, a Luganda expression associated with taking pride

Connects Ugandan botanical heritage with LGBTQ+ identity

Honors the mutuba tree’s relationship with traditional barkcloth-making

Explores cultural continuity, self-respect, and belonging

Incorporates all six Pride colors through botanical accents

Pairs an open laurel-style crown with a natural ivory ribbon tie

Finished with antique botanical linework and painterly texture

Meaningful for Pride celebrations and year-round wear

THE SHIRT — AS COLOUR 5001

This design is printed on the AS Colour 5001, a premium mid-weight T-shirt made for lasting everyday wear.
