A Family We Build | Nandi-Inspired Vintage Art T-Shirt

A Family We Build honors the relationships, responsibilities, and shared lives through which family takes shape. Part of Walt & Pete®’s Threads of Belonging collection, this vintage-style illustrated T-shirt draws inspiration from Nandi woman-to-woman marriage traditions in Kenya—a history that invites a deeper understanding of kinship, inheritance, and women’s social roles.

Two adult women stand closely together in an imagined highland setting. One holds a wooden staff and looks confidently into the distance; the other rests a hand gently on her companion’s arm. Their expressions suggest warmth, trust, and mutual regard. Earth-toned wrapped garments, layered beadwork, and softly textured details give the portrait its vintage character.

A thatched dwelling, a clay vessel, green vegetation, and distant hills surround the figures. Warm ochre, muted burgundy, and weathered greens create a composition rooted in the idea of home. Beneath the illustration, “A Family We Build” appears in antique serif lettering, followed by “Nandi · Kenya.” The title expresses the artwork’s central theme: family is sustained through care, commitment, and the work of building a life together.

The history behind the inspiration

Among the Nandi, researchers have documented a customary institution in which a woman could marry another woman and take on the socially recognized role often described in scholarship as a “female husband.” Historically, this arrangement could help sustain a family lineage when a woman lacked a male heir. It also established responsibilities and rights relating to children, property, and inheritance.

The woman occupying the husband’s role could become the socially recognized parent of children born to her wife, while biological fatherhood involved a man. This distinction between biological and social parenthood is essential to understanding the institution. Woman-to-woman marriage was not, by itself, evidence of a sexual relationship between the women, and should not automatically be described as lesbian marriage or modern LGBTQ+ equality.

A Family We Build reflects on this history through a contemporary artistic interpretation. The figures are imagined adults, and their clothing, adornment, and surroundings are illustrative rather than a verified historical reconstruction. Their gentle gestures express the design’s themes of companionship and household connection without assigning them a specific sexual identity.

For those drawn to African history, women’s stories, and the many forms of belonging, this design offers a thoughtful invitation to see family with greater depth.
