Both participants wear loose olive-toned garments, leather footwear, and substantial boxing gloves. One man extends an arm toward the other’s shoulder while their remaining gloved hands meet near the center of the composition. Horizontal wood paneling and the flag form a strong architectural backdrop. The setting resembles a military or institutional training facility, although no visible insignia establishes a specific unit or service branch.

The existing catalog estimates circa 1917–1925 and associates the image with First World War–era military physical training. The 48-star flag is consistent with this period but, on its own, supports only a broad 1912–1959 range. The photographer, location, participants, and precise technique are unknown.

In early twentieth-century training environments, boxing could develop balance, coordination, and endurance as well as provide recreation. This photograph records a demonstration or close-contact exercise rather than a verified competitive bout.
