Milwaukee's Legendary Dance Club Lives On

Some places become more than a bar—they become a community. Club 219 stood at the center of Milwaukee's LGBTQ nightlife for nearly twenty-five years, welcoming generations of friends, performers, dancers, and allies through its doors at 219 South 2nd Street. Originally opening in February 1981, the club quickly earned a reputation as one of Wisconsin's premier dance destinations. 

Before becoming Club 219, the space briefly operated under the bold name "Trash." Early advertisements encouraged patrons to "Trash It Up," a phrase that survived the transition into Club 219 and became one of the venue's most recognizable slogans. The building itself represents decades of Milwaukee LGBTQ history, having previously housed several important queer establishments stretching back to the 1970s. 

Under the leadership of Tony Canfora and Del Slowik, Club 219 evolved into one of the Midwest's premier LGBTQ entertainment venues. Lavish drag productions, nationally known entertainers, high-energy dance floors, and unforgettable holiday celebrations helped define what historians now describe as Milwaukee's Golden Age of Drag.
