Missing Art Studies - 1776 | paire 032 - French Expédition Crossing Together

Portrait No. 032 of 250

Companions of Liberty is Walt & Pete®'s signature collection of 250 historically inspired portraits created to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Drawing upon Revolutionary War research, surviving military uniforms, archival records, period artwork, and material culture, the collection celebrates overlooked individuals whose service and perseverance helped shape the nation's founding while encouraging thoughtful exploration of early American history.

This portrait depicts two enlisted soldiers of the French Expédition Particulière seated closely together aboard a small river craft during a winter crossing. Wrapped in heavy campaign blankets against the cold, they wear documented French military uniforms with white coats, blue facings, black neck stocks, buff leather crossbelts, and cocked hats. A flintlock musket rests beside one soldier while fellow soldiers row the vessel in the background.

Beyond the river, a colonial town rises beneath a dramatic winter sky filled with layered clouds. The restrained palette of muted whites, blues, grays, and warm earth tones evokes the atmosphere of late eighteenth-century military painting, while visible craquelure and aged varnish recreate the appearance of a conserved museum oil portrait.

Why These Stories Matter

The American Revolution depended not only upon famous commanders but also upon thousands of enlisted soldiers and allied forces whose daily endurance made victory possible. By preserving historically informed artistic interpretations of these overlooked participants, the Companions of Liberty collection broadens public appreciation for the diverse military service, international cooperation, and shared sacrifice that contributed to American independence.
