The Slide 1890s New York T-Shirt | Historic Gay Bar Heritage Tee

Before Stonewall. Before the modern gay bar. Before LGBTQ+ communities had the language of liberation, there was The Slide.

At 157 Bleecker Street in New York City, a basement saloon became one of the most notorious gathering places in the emerging queer world of the 1890s.

Operated by Frank Stevenson, The Slide attracted men whose appearance, behavior, and social lives challenged the rigid conventions of Victorian society. Contemporary newspapers described its patrons and workers using derogatory language, including the term “fairies,” while sensational accounts portrayed the establishment as a place of scandal and vice.

Yet behind those hostile descriptions lies an extraordinary piece of LGBTQ+ history.

The Slide was part of an early urban social world in which men could encounter others who shared experiences and expressions outside the expectations of respectable society. Although the establishment was closed by police in 1892, the historical record preserves evidence of queer life decades before the modern LGBTQ+ rights movement.

Today, The Slide stands as an important reminder that our history did not begin at Stonewall.

The Front Design — The Victorian Storefront

The front artwork reimagines The Slide through the visual language of late-nineteenth-century commercial engraving.

An ornate Victorian border surrounds a detailed architectural illustration of a red-brick New York storefront. Elaborate red-and-ivory lettering announces THE SLIDE, while the historic address, 157 Bleecker Street, New York, anchors the composition.

The architectural illustration is an original interpretation rather than a verified reproduction of the establishment's appearance.

The restrained palette of brick red, antique ivory, and aged black recalls the engraved advertisements, trade cards, and commercial signage of the 1890s.

The Back Design — New York's “Worst Dive”

The complementary circular graphic draws on the sensational newspaper language that helped preserve The Slide in the historical record.

An elaborate Victorian medallion features the establishment's name, an ornamental central monogram, the historic Bleecker Street address, and the period designation 1890s.

Two decorative ribbons reproduce hostile descriptions associated with The Slide's reputation, including “New York's Worst Dive” and references to the effeminate men who gathered there.

The lower border commemorates the establishment's documented police closure in 1892.

Rather than celebrating the prejudice expressed in nineteenth-century reporting, the design reclaims that language as evidence of a community whose existence was recorded largely through the voices of its critics.

The result is an original historical tribute that invites curiosity and encourages the rediscovery of overlooked LGBTQ+ history.
