K’é: Every Relative Belongs | Diné LGBTQ+ & Two-Spirit Pride T-Shirt

K’É • EVERY RELATIVE BELONGS expresses a message of belonging grounded in the Diné principle of K’é. Often translated simply as “kinship,” K’é carries a broader understanding of relationship, respect, reciprocity, accountability, and the responsibilities people hold toward one another. “Every Relative Belongs” is not presented as a literal translation; it is an English statement inspired by the principle that relationship carries an obligation to recognize, respect, and care for others.

The Diné—often called the Navajo people—are an Indigenous nation whose history is inseparable from homeland, language, family, sovereignty, and survival. Between 1863 and 1866, the United States forcibly removed more than 10,000 Diné people from their homelands and confined them at Bosque Redondo. After years of loss and deprivation, Diné leaders negotiated the Treaty of 1868, which secured their return home. Today, the Navajo Nation remains a sovereign Native nation, while Diné communities continue to sustain their language, cultural knowledge, family systems, and responsibilities across generations.

The front centers the word K’É in bold, warm-cream lettering with a turquoise shadow. A flowing constellation of antique-gold and muted Pride-colored stars surrounds the declaration EVERY RELATIVE BELONGS. The individual stars represent distinct relatives connected within a larger field of relationship: each remains visible, and each contributes to the whole. The design uses an original celestial composition rather than ceremonial imagery or borrowed cultural patterns.

The back reads HELD IN KINSHIP • GUIDED BY LOVE, followed by DINÉ LGBTQ+ & TWO-SPIRIT PRIDE. Its central star and two open arcs create a quieter companion to the front. “Held in Kinship” speaks to belonging within a network of relatives; “Guided by Love” frames that relationship as an active responsibility expressed through respect, compassion, and care. The smaller Pride line names the Diné LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit relatives being honored.

Contemporary Diné Pride is part of this continuing history. In 2020, the Navajo Nation Council established Diné Pride Week and recognized the importance of LGBTQ+ and Two-Spirit relatives within Diné life and diversity. Two-Spirit is a modern intertribal term adopted in 1990 and used by some Indigenous people for culturally situated identities, roles, or experiences involving gender, sexuality, spirituality, or community. It is not a universal identity and should not be treated simply as an Indigenous synonym for LGBTQ+.
