The original Gadsden flag emerged during the American Revolution and is traditionally associated with Christopher Gadsden, who presented a version featuring a coiled rattlesnake and the words “DONT TREAD ON ME” in 1775. The rattlesnake served as a warning against oppression: peaceful when left undisturbed but prepared to defend itself when threatened. Although the flag has acquired many political associations over time, its central imagery remains rooted in resistance, independence, and opposition to unjust control.

Walt & Pete’s interpretation redirects that warning toward a universal principle: human rights must not be violated, restricted, or selectively granted. The snake is rendered in Pride-inspired colors to represent LGBTQ+ people and the broader diversity of communities whose rights continue to require protection. The wording intentionally uses DONT without an apostrophe, reflecting the visual treatment used in the original Walt & Pete design.
