Before Stonewall, before Pride marches and before LGBTQ+ nightlife could exist openly in most American cities, there was Cherry Grove—and at the center of its social life stood Duffy’s Hotel.

Operating under the Duffy’s name from approximately 1939 until 1956, the hotel welcomed summer visitors to Cherry Grove on New York’s Fire Island. With its own generator, electric lights and telephone service, Duffy’s offered comforts that were still uncommon in the isolated beach community. Its hotel bar soon became one of Cherry Grove’s most important gathering places.

During the 1940s and 1950s, gay men and lesbians came to Duffy’s to drink, socialize, and occasionally dance together. Although it was not originally established as an explicitly gay bar, its welcoming atmosphere helped make it a formative public gathering place in Cherry Grove’s emerging LGBTQ+ community. At a time when same-sex dancing and public displays of affection could bring harassment, arrest or exposure, places like Duffy’s provided a rare measure of freedom.

Duffy’s Hotel was destroyed by fire on September 27, 1956. A new hotel was subsequently constructed on the property, beginning the later chapter associated with the Grove Hotel and Ice Palace. Although Duffy’s disappeared, its place in the development of Cherry Grove—and in America’s pre-Stonewall LGBTQ+ history—remains significant.

The front of this shirt features an original hotel-key emblem surrounded by nautical rope and coastal grasses. “Duffy’s Hotel,” “Cherry Grove” and “Fire Island, N.Y.” are rendered in refined period typography inspired by mid-century resort ephemera.

The oversized back illustration imagines a summer arrival at Duffy’s: a passenger ferry crosses the Great South Bay toward a wood-shingled hotel, dock and veranda. Weathered typography advertises “Electric Lights • Telephone • Bar & Dining,” recalling the conveniences that helped make the hotel a center of island life. The artwork is entirely original and does not reproduce an archival photograph or surviving commercial logo.

Printed with a softly distressed finish, the design feels like a cherished Fire Island souvenir rediscovered after more than seventy years.
