The Fire Island Monster Cherry Grove T-Shirt | Vintage Gay Bar History Tee
The Monster Cherry Grove Fire Island Vintage Gay Bar T-Shirt commemorates the original Fire Island establishment created by restaurateur and nightclub owner Joe Scialo. Located on Ocean Walk in Cherry Grove, New York, The Monster brought restaurant dining, a piano bar, and disco dancing together within one destination. This original Walt & Pete® design interprets that history through a warm, period-informed combination of resort graphics, theatrical lettering, music, cocktails, and seaside imagery.
Historical accounts generally trace The Monster’s beginning to 1969, although the Cherry Grove Archives dates the opening of the Fire Island venue to 1971. What is firmly documented is Scialo’s role in shaping the establishment and its identity. The restaurant offered dining, while the piano bar provided live musical entertainment and the front disco—known as Green Lips—served as its energetic dance space. The Monster’s unusual name reportedly came from a carved wooden sea creature associated with a Coney Island carousel, an origin reflected in its memorable mythological imagery.
The venue belonged to a much larger Cherry Grove history. By the middle of the twentieth century, this remote Fire Island community had become an established summer destination for gay men and lesbians. In an era when LGBTQ+ people faced discrimination in employment, housing, public accommodations, and nightlife, places such as Cherry Grove provided room for social life, performance, artistic expression, and community formation. Restaurants, bars, hotels, clubs, and private homes collectively shaped a cultural landscape whose importance extended far beyond the island.
The shirt’s front design presents a stylized winged sea creature rising above green waves and an orange sun. Curving cream-and-orange lettering reads “The Fire Island Monster,” while a green banner identifies “Cherry Grove.” The composition concludes with “Est. 1969,” reflecting the opening year cited by several historical sources. Burnt orange, evergreen, cream, and black give the artwork the appearance of a late-1960s or early-1970s resort emblem.
The oversized back design celebrates Green Lips, the disco associated with The Monster. Large avocado-green lettering announces “Green Lips at The Monster,” surrounded by a grand piano, cocktail glass, musical notes, dancing-light motif, stylized lips, and curling ocean waves. The phrases “Piano Bar • Dining • Disco,” “Cherry Grove • Fire Island,” and “Est. 1969” bring the venue’s different identities together in one exuberant period-inspired composition.
Joe Scialo later expanded The Monster name to Key West and Manhattan. He sold the Cherry Grove establishment in 1987, after which the site passed through several subsequent identities. This shirt does not reproduce original venue merchandise; it is a contemporary commemorative design informed by surviving histories and the visual culture of its era.
