Hommes 001 | Nine Men with Books Beside a Christmas Tree | Vintage Photography Poster

Estimated to date from circa 1905–1915, the original photograph depicts nine unidentified men arranged in several rows within a decorated room. Their clothing includes tailored suits, waistcoats, high collars, neckties, and bow ties. Several wear mustaches, while others are clean-shaven. These details are consistent with early twentieth-century men’s fashions.

Open books and booklets appear throughout the composition. A decorated Christmas tree stands behind the central figures, beneath an elaborate suspended light fixture. Patterned wallpaper, wooden trim, and curtains establish the room’s richly furnished character.

Several men place their arms around neighboring figures or rest their hands on another man’s shoulder. These gestures are visible elements of the group portrait, although the circumstances of the gathering and the men’s relationships remain undocumented.

The original photograph is cataloged as a gelatin silver print measuring approximately 5 × 7 inches. The photographer, geographic location, and identities of the subjects are unknown.

Historical Male Gatherings

Group photographs from the early twentieth century preserve evidence of social life, shared activities, clothing, and interior environments. Hommes 001 is especially notable for its combination of books, Christmas decorations, and physical closeness among the men. The scene may invite questions about the gathering, but the photograph does not establish whether it represents a family occasion, social organization, or other event.

Within Walt & Pete®’s Hommes Collection, the image contributes to the preservation of historical male social worlds without assigning undocumented identities or relationships. The photograph has been digitally restored and colorized. Its colors are contemporary interpretations rather than verified original colors.

Historical Holiday Wall Art

The Christmas tree, decorative interior, and richly layered composition make this poster particularly suitable for libraries, studies, reading rooms, and seasonal gallery walls. It complements dark wood, antique furniture, traditional holiday decorations, and collections of historical photography.

Care instructions: If the poster does gather any dust, you may wipe it off gently with a clean, dry cloth.
