Hommes 004 | Men Resting in Shipboard Hammocks | Vintage Photography Poster

Pale canvas hammocks hang between exposed pipes and metal fittings in a compact interior, where three shirtless men occupy the foreground. One reclines with his arms behind his head, another sits beside him with an outstretched hand, and a bearded man rests in a second hammock to the right.

Hommes 004 presents this distinctive historical photograph as a restored and colorized vintage photography poster from Walt & Pete®.

The Photograph — Estimated to date from circa 1915–1925, the original photograph records men resting among suspended canvas hammocks in an enclosed space. At left, a reclining man faces the central figure, whose hand rests against his upper chest and shoulder. Their positions form a prominent visual connection across the hammock. The central man has short, side-parted hair and sits upright, turned toward his reclining companion.

At right, a bearded man lies back with one arm extended outward. Portions of an additional reclining figure are visible behind him. Broad folds of hammock fabric occupy the lower half of the composition. Vertical and diagonal pipes, metal panels, and structural fittings frame the figures. These features suggest a maritime sleeping compartment, possibly aboard a vessel, although the exact location and function of the space remain unverified. The original photograph is cataloged as a gelatin silver print, approximately 3 × 5 inches. Its photographer and place of production are unknown.

Historical Male Companionship — Shared sleeping arrangements were part of life in various institutional, working, and maritime environments during the early twentieth century. Hommes 004 preserves the physical arrangement of men in a confined communal space. The central figure’s extended hand is a particularly notable detail, but the photograph does not establish the men’s occupations, personal relationships, or sexual identities. Within Walt & Pete®’s Hommes Collection, this image contributes to the visual history of male companionship and shared environments.

The photograph has been digitally restored and colorized. Its cream, gray, and muted olive tones are contemporary interpretations rather than verified original colors.

Historical Wall Art — The contrasting curves of the hammocks and rigid metal structures make this poster a compelling addition to a study, library, bedroom, or collected gallery wall. Its subdued palette complements dark wood, industrial furnishings, and maritime-inspired interiors.

Care instructions: If the poster does gather any dust, you may wipe it off gently with a clean, dry cloth. To remove spots or smudges from acrylic or glass, we recommend applying glass cleaner to a clean, soft, dry cloth or paper towel and then to the surface so that the cleaner does not settle on the frame, then buff the surface dry to remove any streaks.
