Missing Art Studies — Grant 040 is a contemporary artwork from the Walt & Pete® Missing Art Studies series, a collection imagining the stories that might have appeared more openly in American art had LGBTQ+ lives been represented without exclusion.

The Artwork. Two men stand closely together, their hands clasped as they dance beneath the shelter of a farmhouse porch. One wears a warm yellow button-up shirt and brown trousers. His companion wears a light-colored shirt and tan trousers. Their gentle embrace creates the emotional center of the composition. A luminous moon rises beyond the porch columns, while tall corn stalks and distant farm buildings establish a distinctly Midwestern landscape. A wooden rocking chair, simple furnishings, and warm lamplight complete the intimate domestic setting.

The Missing Art Studies Collection. Inspired by the visual traditions of American Regionalism and the rural subject matter associated with artist Grant Wood, this series reimagines familiar scenes of Midwestern life through a more inclusive perspective. Rather than reproducing an existing historical painting, Grant 040 introduces a fictional moment of Black queer companionship into the visual language of rural Americana. The work invites viewers to consider whose lives were represented in traditional American art—and whose stories remained unseen.
