Paire 103 | Two Black Men in Straw Hats | Vintage Photography Poster

Two Black men sit closely together before a neutral studio backdrop, wearing broad-brimmed straw hats and carefully arranged early twentieth-century clothing. Their composed expressions, direct gazes, and overlapping hands give this portrait a distinctive presence.

Paire 103 presents this historical photograph as a restored and colorized vintage photography poster from Walt & Pete®.

The Photograph

Estimated to date from circa 1905–1915, the original photograph depicts two unidentified Black men seated side by side in a commercial photography studio.

The younger-looking man on the left wears a striped, high-collared shirt beneath a dark waistcoat, with a light necktie and broad-brimmed straw hat.

His companion wears a dark double-breasted jacket, a light necktie, and a similarly structured straw hat.

Their shoulders touch, and their hands meet near the lower center of the composition. Both face the camera directly, while the plain studio backdrop keeps attention on their clothing, expressions, and positioning.

The original photograph is cataloged as a probable sepia-toned gelatin silver print measuring approximately 2.5 × 3.5 inches.

The photographer, geographic location, and identities of the men remain unknown.

African American Portraiture and Male Companionship

Studio photography provided Black Americans with opportunities to preserve personal likenesses and present themselves through carefully selected clothing, poses, and photographic settings.

Portraits such as Paire 103 are valuable records of individual presence, fashion, and self-presentation during the early twentieth century.

The men's close arrangement and visible hand contact are important compositional details. They document physical proximity without establishing a particular relationship or sexual identity.

Within Walt & Pete®'s Paire Collection, the photograph contributes to the preservation of African American visual history and historical representations of male companionship.

The photograph has been digitally restored and colorized. Its colors are contemporary interpretations rather than verified original colors.

Historical Wall Art

The warm neutral background, textured straw hats, and dark tailored clothing make this poster well suited to studies, libraries, bedrooms, and collected gallery walls.

Its restrained studio composition complements dark wood, leather, vintage furnishings, and thoughtfully curated historical artwork.
