Paire 161 | Two African American Men, Memphis 1942 | Vintage Photography Poster

Two African American men stand together in a Memphis photography studio in 1942, their hands meeting near the center of the composition. Wearing distinctive hats, textured knit sweaters, and carefully tailored trousers, they present a striking portrait of Black American style and companionship during the Second World War era.

Paire 161 preserves this remarkable historical image as a restored and colorized vintage photography poster.

The Photograph

A small identification sign in the lower-right corner reads “1942 MEMPHIS DAISY STUDIO.” Unlike many surviving vintage portraits, this photograph contains visible evidence of its date, location, and studio attribution.

The man on the left wears a tilted cap, dark patterned sweater, light pleated trousers, and polished shoes. One foot rests on a low bench, creating an informal, asymmetrical pose.

Beside him, the second man stands upright in a wide-brimmed hat, ribbed sweater, collared shirt, and striped trousers.

Their hands meet in front of the standing figure, forming the photograph's central visual connection. The plain backdrop and restrained studio setting direct attention to their clothing, expressions, and physical arrangement.

Black American Photography & Historical Companionship

Paire 161 offers a valuable glimpse into African American photographic culture during the early 1940s. Studio portraits allowed individuals to preserve their appearance, personal style, and chosen arrangements before the camera. Here, the men's contrasting poses and coordinated presentation distinguish the image from more conventional formal portraits.

Within Walt & Pete®'s Paire Collection, the photograph contributes to the preservation of Black American visual history and historical images of male companionship. Although their hands touch, the men's identities and relationship remain undocumented.

The reproduction has been digitally restored and colorized. Its colors are contemporary interpretations rather than verified historical details.

Distinctive Historical Wall Art

With its warm neutral palette, strong vertical composition, and richly textured clothing, Paire 161 complements libraries, studies, bedrooms, living rooms, and carefully curated gallery walls. Its period character pairs beautifully with dark wood furnishings, leather, antique brass, and vintage interiors.
