Like every great mascot, the Rainbow Riders unicorn unites the community under one symbol and reminds each member: You belong on this team.

For many LGBTQ+ students, traditional Pride imagery can attract unwanted attention or harassment. Rainbow colors and Pride symbols have also faced restrictions in some schools and public institutions. Rainbow Riders offers a more subtle form of recognition—a symbol LGBTQ+ students and allies can use to identify one another without requiring anyone to reveal more about themselves than they feel safe sharing.

For many young people, displaying traditional Pride imagery can feel complicated. Rainbow colors may attract unwanted attention, and Pride symbols have faced growing restrictions in some schools and public institutions. Recent research also continues to document harassment and increasingly hostile school climates for LGBTQ+ students. GLSEN’s 2025 National School Climate Survey and reporting on restrictions involving Pride flags in schools confirm that these concerns are real.
