During the following decade, he participated in contests and sparring exhibitions, performed in music halls, managed boxing rooms, served as a master of ceremonies, and instructed other boxers. He also worked during the 1880s as an animal tamer at the East London Aquarium, where records associate him with bears, wolves, lions, and hyenas. His varied career reflects the overlapping worlds of boxing, popular entertainment, physical culture, and performance in Victorian London.

In this portrait, Moscow is shown from approximately mid-thigh upward, his torso angled slightly and both fists raised. One hand is held close to his chest while the other extends forward. His gaze passes beyond the camera, and his high-waisted trousers are secured by a broad waistband and dark sash. Soft studio lighting models the figure against a painted backdrop with foliage at the left. No boxing gloves, trophy, championship belt, or other equipment is visible; the image is a staged fighting pose rather than documentation of a bout.

The photograph was one of three boxer portraits submitted for copyright registration in April 1888 by photographer Harry Carpenter of Mile End Road in London’s East End. Its survival in the UK National Archives gives the image importance beyond boxing: it is also a rare named portrait of a Black Caribbean migrant participating in the sporting and entertainment culture of Victorian Britain.

Material, Process & Historical Placement

The exact photographic process, paper support, mount, and original dimensions have not been verified. The photograph belongs to a group of three boxer portraits registered by Harry Carpenter in April 1888, each showing its subject in a similar fighting attitude.

The portrait dates from a transitional period in British boxing culture when public sparring exhibitions, boxing rooms, public houses, music halls, and athletic clubs all provided venues for the sport. Surviving research indicates that Moscow was respected as a lightweight boxer, trainer, boxing-room manager, music-hall performer, and instructor. Promotional descriptions occasionally called him a champion, but current research does not support a formal world-championship claim.

Historical records spell his boxing alias as both “Ching Hook” and “Ching Ghook.” Modern scholarship cautions that the name may have been imposed through the racial language of Victorian sporting culture rather than freely selected by Moscow himself. For that reason, Walt & Pete® gives primary position to his documented name, Hezekiah Moscow.
