The historical photograph survives as part of an album in the Jules Beau sports-photography collection. The principal sitter, decorative architectural surround, medals, sash, and much of the French-language inscription remain legible.

The surviving source exhibits tonal variation, mild fading, localized softness, minor marks, and losses of fine detail consistent with an image of this age and its reproduction history. The Bibliothèque nationale de France identifies this image as folio 45 in Volume 11 of the Jules Beau Collection.

Pierre-Noël Rouveyrolis, known as Noël le Gaulois, was born in Sète in 1863. Historical research identifies him as a wrestler and practitioner of athlétisme lourd—the French term then used for strength athletics involving weights and heavy lifting. He established himself in Paris, where accounts connect his wine business with an informal training space for strength athletes.

In 1897, the Brussels International Exposition hosted an international athletic competition. Noël le Gaulois was recognized as champion of strength at the event. Because late-19th-century sporting organizations and championship structures differed substantially from modern international federations, the phrase “World Champion” is best understood and presented as the contemporary title displayed on the photograph rather than as a modern federation designation.
