The plate preserves substantial detail in the sitter’s face, hair, arms, athletic clothing, and hand position. Tonal separation is generally strong, although the light background is compressed in places and some detail is reduced in the darkest portions of the singlet and trunks.

Observable deterioration includes scattered dust, fine scratches, small abrasions, and localized emulsion blemishes. Several prominent scratches cross the sitter’s forehead and the left side of the image. A long, nearly vertical scratch extends through the lower center, while additional linear marks appear across the background and margins. Areas of pale spotting and surface disturbance are concentrated along the left side. The lower-left corner exhibits localized loss, and the plate edges show wear and uneven density. Handwritten agency and reference numbers remain visible within the right margin.

The available reproduction does not establish whether the glass support is cracked or whether the photographic emulsion is actively lifting. Direct examination would be required to evaluate structural stability. Conservation treatment and preservation imaging may be appropriate to stabilize vulnerable areas and improve access to details obscured by scratches and surface deposits.
