Step into the golden age of physical culture with Athlétisme, a museum-inspired playing card deck celebrating vintage weightlifting, athleticism, strength, and sporting life.

Created by Walt & Pete®, the deck combines restored historical photography with the elegance of early-20th-century playing-card design. Its warm archival palette, aged-paper texture, ornamental borders, and illustrated athletes evoke the character of vintage gymnasiums, sporting clubs, and physical-culture ephemera.

Each suit features traditional, easily recognizable playing-card symbols, while the special cards introduce a distinctive cast of vintage athletes:

The illustrated court cards feature unique athletic poses, including both male and female competitors, while the number cards retain a clean, highly playable arrangement.

Historical Images from the Walt & Pete® Archive

The deck’s imagery is connected directly to restored historical photographs preserved in the Walt & Pete® Athlétisme Collection.

The reversible card-back illustration was inspired by Athlétisme 051 | Vintage Outdoor Barbell Squat Photograph. The original photograph depicts an athlete performing an outdoor barbell squat, capturing the strength, ingenuity, and emerging physical-culture movement of the early twentieth century.

The first Joker draws from Athlétisme 050 | Ernest Cadine Vintage Weightlifting Photograph, preserving the commanding presence of the celebrated French weightlifter and Olympic champion.

The second Joker is based on Athlétisme 036 | Partner Exercise Physical Culture Photograph, an engaging historical image of two athletes demonstrating a partner exercise associated with early physical training and sporting culture.

These archival connections make the deck more than a vintage-inspired design. Each selected photograph links the cards to real people, practices, and visual records from the history of strength and physical culture.
