The Black Rabbit 1890s | Historic NYC Gay Bar Heritage T-Shirt

Before Stonewall. Before the modern gay bar. Before the LGBTQ+ rights movement had a name, New Yorkers were already creating places where queer lives could intersect.

One of those places was The Black Rabbit.

Located at 183 Bleecker Street in Greenwich Village, The Black Rabbit was among the earliest documented establishments associated with New York City's emerging gay male subculture.

During the 1890s, the venue attracted men whose identities, social lives, and expressions of masculinity challenged Victorian conventions. Contemporary newspaper reports described the establishment through the language of scandal and moral condemnation.

In 1899 and again in 1900, the establishment attracted police and anti-vice attention, including the involvement of Anthony Comstock and the New York Society for the Suppression of Vice.

Yet the very reports intended to condemn The Black Rabbit also preserved evidence of a community whose history might otherwise have disappeared.

The Front Design — The Black Rabbit Matchbook

Inspired by the ornate commercial printing of the late nineteenth century, the front design reimagines an unfolded advertising matchbook.

A leaping black rabbit appears beneath elaborate Victorian lettering, surrounded by antique red, ivory, and black engraving.

The design includes a period-inspired Greenwich Village streetscape and the historical Bleecker Street address.

The words COCKTAILS · MUSIC · DANCING · FRIENDS are evocative design copy, not a transcription of an authenticated advertisement or a verified entertainment program.

The matchbook is an original imagined artifact, designed to evoke the visual culture of historic nightlife.

The Back Design — The Black Rabbit Emblem

The larger back graphic features a circular Victorian-style medallion with a black rabbit leaping across a brilliant red background.

Ornamental gold scrollwork, engraved typography, and the establishment's name create a dramatic heritage design.

Around the outer border appears language attributed to anti-vice crusader Anthony Comstock, reflecting the hostility directed toward the original establishment.

The historical quotation is included as documentary evidence of persecution, not as an endorsement of the attitudes it expresses.

The contrast between the elegant emblem and its hostile historical language invites a deeper consideration of the lives and gathering places that survived in the historical record.
