Missing Art Studies - 1776 | paire 024 - French Expédition Particulière Portrait

Portrait No. 024 of 250

The Companions of Liberty Collection is a series of 250 historically inspired portraits created by Walt & Pete® to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Drawing upon Revolutionary War scholarship, surviving military artifacts, military records, and period artwork, the collection highlights overlooked stories of service, resilience, and shared purpose through historically informed artistic interpretation.

Artwork Description

This portrait depicts two soldiers of the French Expédition Particulière, the expeditionary force commanded by Rochambeau that assisted the American cause during the Revolutionary War. Both figures wear white military coats with blue facings, waistcoats, neckcloths, and tricorn hats associated with French military service during the Yorktown campaign era.

Presented against a restrained studio-style background, the composition emphasizes uniform details, military equipment, and formal portraiture traditions of the late eighteenth century. The muted palette, warm lighting, and museum-inspired presentation evoke the appearance of a preserved historical oil portrait.

Why These Stories Matter

The American victory at Yorktown depended upon a diverse coalition of soldiers, sailors, laborers, and allies whose contributions are often overlooked in popular history. Preserving and interpreting these stories broadens our understanding of the Revolutionary era and highlights the international cooperation that helped shape the founding of the United States. Through its commitment to LGBTQ, Gay History, and Queer History preservation, Walt & Pete® encourages audiences to explore the many untold stories that exist alongside traditional historical narratives.
