Missing Art Studies - 1776 | paire 025 - French Expédition Particulière Portrait
Portrait No. 025 of 250
Companions of Liberty is a museum-inspired collection of 250 historically informed portraits created by Walt & Pete® to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Drawing upon Revolutionary War history, military records, material culture, and period artwork, the collection highlights overlooked perspectives from the founding era through historically grounded artistic interpretation.
This formal double portrait depicts two soldiers of the French Expédition Particulière, the expeditionary force commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau that aided the American cause during the Revolutionary War. Both figures wear white military coats with blue facings, white waistcoats, crossbelts, cocked hats, and neck stocks characteristic of late eighteenth-century French military dress. The composition follows the traditions of period military portraiture, presenting the soldiers against a restrained dark background that emphasizes uniform details, facial features, and posture. The muted palette, aged varnish effect, and visible craquelure evoke the appearance of an eighteenth-century oil painting.
