Portrait No. 042 of 250
Companions of Liberty is a museum-inspired collection of 250 historically inspired portraits created by Walt & Pete® to commemorate America's 250th Anniversary. Through historically informed artistic interpretation, the series explores overlooked moments of the Revolutionary era, celebrating leadership, service, resilience, friendship, and the many individuals whose contributions helped shape the founding of the United States.
Inside a Continental Army headquarters, two officers stand beside a wooden table covered with military maps, official correspondence, and handwritten documents. One officer carefully studies a map while the other rests a hand upon his companion's arm as both focus on the work before them. A tricorn hat, earthenware pitcher, pewter tankard, and brass candlesticks reinforce the administrative character of the setting.
Both officers wear blue Continental Army coats with buff facings, buff waistcoats and breeches, black neck stocks, white linen shirts, and period-appropriate hairstyles tied with black ribbons. Warm daylight enters through the window while the hearth and surrounding woodwork create an intimate headquarters interior. Additional figures appear quietly in the background, emphasizing the routine work of military administration during the Revolutionary War.
Why These Stories Matter
The American Revolution depended not only upon battlefield courage but also upon careful planning, communication, logistics, and leadership. Headquarters scenes such as this remind us that maps, correspondence, and thoughtful decision-making were essential to achieving independence. Through the preservation of historically inspired artwork, Walt & Pete® encourages a deeper appreciation of the many overlooked aspects of America's founding while serving audiences interested in LGBTQ history as part of its broader mission of historical preservation.
