Missing Art Studies - 1776 | paire 045 - Winter Quarters Conversation | Black Continental Army
Portrait No. 045 of 250
The Companions of Liberty collection is a museum-inspired series of 250 historically inspired portraits created by Walt & Pete® to commemorate America's 250th Anniversary. Through historically informed artistic interpretation, the collection illuminates overlooked moments from the Revolutionary era, celebrating military service, perseverance, friendship, leadership, and the diverse individuals whose lives shaped the founding of the United States.
Two Black Continental Army soldiers sit together outside a canvas military tent during winter quarters beneath a heavy shared wool blanket. One soldier gestures while speaking as the other listens attentively. Nearby are two stacked flintlock muskets, a canteen, rope, haversack, tin cup, cooking vessel, and other campaign equipment arranged beside the tent's entrance.
The soldiers wear documented late-war Continental Army enlisted uniforms consisting of blue wool coats, buff waistcoats and breeches, white neck stocks, weathered leather equipment, and practical military hairstyles. A saddled horse, rows of tents, additional soldiers, and the snowy encampment extend into the background beneath soft winter daylight, creating a historically grounded representation of everyday military life.
Why These Stories Matter
The Revolutionary War was sustained not only by battles but also by the daily endurance, cooperation, and resilience of soldiers living for months in difficult encampments. Recognizing the documented service of Black Patriots helps broaden public understanding of the diverse individuals who contributed to American independence while preserving stories that have too often received limited attention. Through historically informed artwork, Walt & Pete® encourages thoughtful exploration of America's shared history while serving audiences interested in LGBTQ, Gay, and Queer history through its broader preservation mission.
