Portrait No. 046 of 250

The Companions of Liberty collection is a museum-inspired series of 250 historically inspired portraits created by Walt & Pete® to commemorate America's 250th Anniversary. Through historically informed artistic interpretation, the collection illuminates overlooked moments of the Revolutionary era while celebrating courage, perseverance, military service, friendship, and the diverse individuals who shaped America's founding generation.

Two documented Black Continental Army enlisted soldiers sit beneath the shelter of a large tree during a winter encampment while carefully reading a wax-sealed letter. One soldier supports the correspondence while the other studies its contents. A reassuring hand rests across one shoulder as both focus their attention on the document. Behind them, rows of military tents and fellow soldiers gathered around campfires establish the broader setting of a Continental Army encampment.

The soldiers wear late-war Continental Army uniforms with blue wool coats, buff waistcoats and breeches, white neck stocks, and buff leather crossbelts. The restrained color palette, storm-darkened sky, weathered landscape, and warm firelight evoke the atmosphere of an eighteenth-century winter campaign while emphasizing historically documented military material culture.

Why These Stories Matter

The Revolutionary War was sustained through countless ordinary moments beyond the battlefield. Letters from family, official correspondence, and shared news helped maintain morale during long campaigns and harsh winters. Recognizing the documented service of Black Continental soldiers broadens public understanding of the diverse individuals who contributed to American independence while supporting Walt & Pete®'s broader mission of preserving overlooked history for audiences interested in LGBTQ, Gay, and Queer history through responsible historical storytelling.
