This portrait depicts soldiers of the French Expédition Particulière, the expeditionary force commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau and sent to North America in support of the American cause during the Revolutionary War. The soldiers wear white French military coats with blue facings, white waistcoats, white breeches, black neckcloths, and buff leather equipment consistent with French military dress of the early 1780s.
