Portrait No. 014 of 250
The Companions of Liberty Collection is a series of 250 historically inspired portraits created by Walt & Pete® to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Through historically informed artistic interpretation, the collection explores overlooked experiences, alliances, and daily realities that shaped the American Revolution. Each portrait is designed to illuminate the diverse individuals whose contributions helped secure American independence.
This portrait depicts soldiers of the French Expédition Particulière, the expeditionary force commanded by the Comte de Rochambeau and sent to North America in support of the American cause during the Revolutionary War. Four soldiers travel together through a winter landscape, with the two central figures sharing the warmth of a wool campaign blanket as they sit during a cold-weather journey.
The soldiers wear white French military coats with blue facings, white waistcoats, white breeches, black neckcloths, and buff leather equipment consistent with French military dress of the early 1780s. Snow-covered fields, bare trees, and a distant farmhouse establish the hardships of winter campaigning faced by allied forces operating in North America.
Why These Stories Matter
The French alliance was one of the most important factors in securing American independence. Thousands of French soldiers crossed the Atlantic to serve alongside American forces, contributing manpower, resources, training, and battlefield support. By highlighting the daily experiences of these allied soldiers, artworks such as this broaden public understanding of the international cooperation that helped shape the outcome of the Revolution.
