Missing Art Studies - 1776 | paire 027 - Black Continental Army Soldiers Portrait

Portrait No. 027 of 250

The Companions of Liberty collection is an ambitious series of 250 museum-inspired historical portraits created by Walt & Pete® to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Each artwork draws upon Revolutionary-era research, surviving military records, period material culture, and eighteenth-century artistic traditions to illuminate overlooked stories from the American Revolution with historical integrity and museum-quality presentation.

Artwork Description

This portrait depicts two documented Black enlisted soldiers of the Continental Army standing in formal military dress during the late Revolutionary War. Both wear blue regimental coats, buff waistcoats, buff breeches, black neck stocks, cocked hats, buff leather crossbelts, and campaign equipment rendered with historically informed detail.

Presented as a paired military portrait, the composition emphasizes dignity, professionalism, and military service through balanced poses, restrained expressions, and careful attention to eighteenth-century uniform construction. The warm palette, visible brushwork, aged varnish, and subtle craquelure evoke the appearance of a conserved eighteenth-century oil painting.

Why These Stories Matter

Thousands of African Americans served the Revolutionary cause in military and civilian roles, yet many remain absent from traditional public memory. Preserving historically grounded portrayals of Black Revolutionary War service broadens our understanding of the people who contributed to America's founding and encourages a richer, more inclusive appreciation of the nation's history while remaining faithful to documented evidence.
