Missing Art Studies - 1776 | paire 039 - French Expédition Particulière Haversack Repair | Black Soldiers

Portrait No. 039 of 250

Companions of Liberty is Walt & Pete®'s signature collection of 250 historically inspired portraits created to commemorate America's 250th Anniversary. Inspired by surviving military artifacts, archival records, and eighteenth-century portraiture, the collection illuminates overlooked stories of service, resilience, and shared purpose through historically informed artistic interpretation. Each portrait honors the everyday people whose work helped shape the American Revolution while reflecting Walt & Pete®'s broader mission of preserving overlooked history.

Artwork Description

Inside a French military supply storehouse, two Black soldiers serving with the French Expédition Particulière under the Comte de Rochambeau carefully repair a worn campaign haversack using needle and thread. One soldier stitches the torn canvas while the other steadies the bag, demonstrating the skilled maintenance required to preserve military equipment during extended campaigns.

The interior contains coiled rope, storage barrels, a period lantern, military clothing, and practical supply furnishings associated with eighteenth-century logistics. The soldiers wear historically researched uniforms of the French expeditionary force, while warm lantern light and muted colonial pigments evoke the appearance of a carefully conserved late eighteenth-century oil painting.

Why These Stories Matter

The French alliance played a decisive role in securing American independence, yet the daily work that sustained the expeditionary army is rarely depicted. Repairing equipment, preserving supplies, and maintaining readiness were essential responsibilities shared by enlisted soldiers throughout the campaign. By preserving scenes of ordinary military craftsmanship, this portrait broadens appreciation for the international cooperation and diverse individuals whose labor supported the Revolutionary cause. Through its broader preservation mission, Walt & Pete® also serves audiences interested in LGBTQ History, Gay History, and Queer History while maintaining careful historical integrity in the portrayal of individual subjects.
