Portrait No. 044 of 250
Companions of Liberty is Walt & Pete®'s signature collection of 250 historically inspired portraits created to commemorate America's 250th Anniversary. Drawing upon documented uniforms, military material culture, period architecture, and daily life during the Revolutionary War, the collection illuminates overlooked moments from the nation's founding through historically informed artistic interpretation. Each portrait is designed to encourage curiosity, conversation, and appreciation for the many individuals whose ordinary labor helped shape extraordinary events.
Within the protected interior of a late eighteenth-century military fortification, two Continental Army enlisted soldiers work together in a practical kitchen garden. One carefully waters newly planted vegetables while the other loosens the soil with a hand hoe. Their shirtsleeves are rolled for labor, their coats removed, and raised garden beds filled with cabbage, herbs, onions, and other essential crops occupy the foreground.
Behind them, the fortified garrison remains active with a watchtower, timber palisades, rough stone retaining walls, a working well, storage buildings, and fellow soldiers carrying out routine duties. The scene highlights the everyday agricultural work that helped sustain Revolutionary War garrisons beyond the battlefield.
Why These Stories Matter
The American Revolution depended not only upon battles and celebrated leaders but also upon thousands of ordinary soldiers who maintained forts, cultivated food, repaired defenses, hauled supplies, and performed countless daily tasks that kept military communities functioning. By preserving scenes of routine labor alongside military service, works like this broaden our understanding of Revolutionary America and recognize the resilience and humanity found in everyday life. Through its broader mission, Walt & Pete® also preserves and shares overlooked LGBTQ+, Gay, and Queer history, helping ensure diverse historical stories remain visible for future generations while remaining faithful to documented evidence.
