Portrait No. 049 of 250
The Companions of Liberty Collection is an original series of 250 museum-inspired historical portraits created by Walt & Pete® to commemorate the 250th Anniversary of the United States. Inspired by documented figures, military service, and everyday moments of the Revolutionary era, the collection highlights stories that have often been overlooked, presenting them through historically informed artistic interpretation suitable for collectors, museums, educators, and history enthusiasts.
A Black Continental Army artilleryman carefully cleans the vent of a bronze field cannon while his fellow artilleryman polishes a brass gunner's instrument beside him. Around them, a winter artillery encampment stretches across the snowy landscape with earthworks, additional cannon, stacked ammunition, tents, and fellow soldiers carrying out routine garrison duties.
Rather than depicting battle, the painting captures the essential work that kept Revolutionary artillery operational throughout the long winter months. Every visible object—from the field gun and carriage to the artillery implements and winter encampment—draws inspiration from documented late eighteenth-century military practice.
Why These Stories Matter
The American Revolution depended not only upon famous battles and celebrated commanders but also upon thousands of enlisted soldiers whose daily labor sustained the army. Preserving historically grounded depictions of artillery crews, Black Patriots, and ordinary military life broadens public understanding of the Revolutionary era and honors contributions that deserve greater visibility within America's shared history.
