Studio One Hollywood T-Shirt — West Hollywood Gay Disco & LGBTQ Nightlife History Tee

Some places become more than nightclubs. They become landmarks in the cultural memory of a community.

Studio One opened on May 1, 1974, at 652 North La Peer Drive in West Hollywood. Created specifically for a gay male clientele, the expansive complex offered multiple bars, dancing, dining, theatrical entertainment, themed parties, and the adjoining Backlot performance venue. Open seven nights a week during its height, Studio One became one of the largest and most recognized gay discos in Los Angeles.

The club occupied a building with an unusual Hollywood history. Constructed in 1929 for the Mitchell Camera Company, the industrial structure later housed The Factory, an invitation-only celebrity nightclub, and later became Studio One. Its warehouse-like interior provided the scale for a crowded dance floor that came to define an era of West Hollywood nightlife.

Studio One’s history is both influential and complicated. For many gay men, it provided a highly visible place to dance, gather, and experience community during a period marked by homophobia and police harassment. At the same time, the club was criticized for door policies that discriminated against women, people of color, and those outside its preferred social class. Protests and boycotts organized by LGBTQ community members became part of the establishment’s history. Remembering Studio One means preserving both its cultural importance and the community’s efforts to challenge exclusion within its own spaces.

This Walt & Pete® heritage T-shirt documents Studio One through coordinated front-and-back artwork:

  • The front features a reconstructed embroidered-style Studio One Hollywood club patch in faded burgundy, aged gold, and muted blue. The historical address—652 North La Peer Drive—and “EST. 1974” appear beneath the emblem
  • The back features a large illustrated dance-floor scene adapted into a limited-color 1970s screen-print style. Bold “STUDIO ONE” and “HOLLYWOOD” typography frame the crowd, with the address and founding year preserved below.

Created specifically for dark-colored shirts, the artwork uses aged cream, muted cornflower blue, warm gold, and restrained burgundy for strong contrast without appearing modern or overly polished. The result resembles a recovered piece of West Hollywood nightlife ephemera rather than conventional souvenir merchandise.

Part of the Walt & Pete® Vintage Bar T-Shirt Collection, this design preserves the places where LGBTQ people gathered, performed, organized, and created community.

Walt & Pete® Forgotten Moments, Forever Remembered.

Why You’ll Love It

  • Two-sided historical artwork: An embroidered-style Studio One club emblem appears on the front, while a large illustrated dance-floor scene creates a striking back graphic.
  • Designed for dark shirts: Aged cream, muted blue, warm gold, and faded burgundy provide strong contrast on black, navy, charcoal, and other dark colors.
  • Preserves a landmark: The design documents Studio One’s name, West Hollywood identity, historical address, and 1974 founding year.
  • More than ordinary merchandise: Inspired by surviving nightlife ephemera, the shirt feels like a recovered vintage artifact rather than a modern souvenir.
  •  History with honesty: The story recognizes Studio One’s importance to gay nightlife while acknowledging the discriminatory policies challenged by LGBTQ activists.
  • Made for collectors and storytellers: A distinctive addition for anyone interested in LGBTQ history, disco culture, West Hollywood, or legendary American nightlife.
  • A conversation-starting design: From a distance, it looks like an exceptional vintage club shirt. Up close, it reveals the history of a place that shaped—and complicated—Los Angeles queer nightlife.
