The Geography of Plants: Alexander von Humboldt

Explore the interconnected natural world through a richly detailed woven wall tapestry honoring Alexander von Humboldt—naturalist, geographer, explorer and an influential figure in the development of modern ecology and biogeography.

At the center of the composition rises Chimborazo, the monumental Andean volcano that helped shape Humboldt’s understanding of how elevation, climate, geology and vegetation interact. The mountain progresses from tropical forest and dense montane vegetation to high-altitude grasslands, exposed rock and a snow-covered summit.

Surrounding botanical studies depict a palm, fern, bromeliad, alpine plants, cinchona-like foliage and volcanic specimens. A globe marked with climate lines completes the composition, reflecting Humboldt’s lifelong effort to understand nature as a unified and interconnected system.

Rendered in parchment cream, forest green, tobacco brown, ochre, muted red and blue, the artwork is enclosed within an ornate Arts and Crafts–inspired botanical border.

A New Picture of Nature

Between 1799 and 1804, Humboldt and French botanist Aimé Bonpland traveled through parts of South and Central America, observing plants, geology, climate and elevation.

In 1805, they published a groundbreaking plant-geography diagram that Humboldt called a Naturgemälde, or “picture of nature.” It placed plants along an Andean mountain according to the elevations at which they had been observed.

The work illustrated Humboldt’s revolutionary idea that plants, animals, climate, elevation, and geology should be studied as parts of an interconnected whole. His research helped establish the foundations of plant geography and influenced later understandings of ecosystems, climate zones and environmental relationships. Smithsonian American Art Museum

Chimborazo and the Geography of Plants

Humboldt attempted to climb Chimborazo in 1802. Although he and his companions did not reach the summit, their observations became central to his study of vegetation at different elevations.

The tapestry interprets this history through:

  • A central portrait of Chimborazo
  • Tropical, montane and high-altitude vegetation
  • Botanical specimen illustrations
  • An elevation-inspired plant scale
  • Volcanic rock and mineral specimens
  • A globe with climate and geographic lines
  • The inscription “Cosmos • Unity in Nature”

The Library of Congress records Humboldt and Bonpland’s scientific journey as a major expedition that collected plant specimens and studied the flora, fauna and geology of the Americas. Library of Congress

Woven as a Heritage Textile

Unlike a conventional printed poster, the artwork is woven into the textile using colored threads. The visible weave gives the mountain, plants and ornamental border the warmth and character of a historic educational wall hanging.

Display it in a library, study, classroom, conservatory, office or collected interior. It is particularly suited to admirers of botanical illustration, natural history, ecology, exploration, dark academia and historically inspired home décor.

Humboldt and Queer Historical Interpretation

Humboldt never publicly identified himself using a modern LGBTQ+ identity. However, his close relationships with men and surviving correspondence have led some biographers and LGBTQ+ historians to interpret his life through a queer historical lens.

Because modern identity terms do not always correspond to the language or circumstances of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, this interpretation should not be treated as a definitive self-identification. Walt & Pete® acknowledges that complexity while honoring Humboldt’s documented scientific achievements.

Artwork Notice

This is an original contemporary artwork inspired by Humboldt and Bonpland’s documented studies of plant geography and the Andes. It is not an original Humboldt publication, scientific plate, or historical artifact.
