Alan Mathison Turing (1912–1954) was a British mathematician, logician, cryptanalyst, and foundational figure in computer science and artificial intelligence.

In his landmark 1936 paper, “On Computable Numbers,” Turing described an abstract computing device now known as the Turing machine. The concept provided a mathematical foundation for understanding what computers can—and cannot—calculate.

During the Second World War, Turing worked at Bletchley Park and became a leading member of Hut 8, the section responsible for cryptanalysis of German naval Enigma communications. Working with Gordon Welchman, Harold “Doc” Keen, and others, he contributed to the development of the Bombe machines used in the Allied codebreaking effort.

After the war, Turing designed the Automatic Computing Engine at Britain’s National Physical Laboratory and later worked with early stored-program computers at Manchester. His 1950 paper “Computing Machinery and Intelligence” introduced the imitation game, now commonly called the Turing Test. He also made important contributions to mathematical biology through his work on morphogenesis.

In 1952, Turing was convicted of “gross indecency” because of a consensual relationship with another man and was subjected to hormonal treatment. Queen Elizabeth II granted him a posthumous pardon in 2013.

The Front Design

The front presents two stylized Theban warriors standing shoulder to shoulder behind overlapping shields. The paired warriors reference the Sacred Band of Thebes, traditionally described as 300 soldiers organized into 150 devoted male pairs.

Their overlapping shields symbolize mutual protection, while their shared formation represents loyalty and common purpose. Pride colors move across their armor, cloaks, shields, and spear, bringing LGBTQ+ visibility into an emblem inspired by the ancient world.

The wording places Turing’s identity and accomplishments within a much longer history of men whose courage and devotion challenged the limits imposed upon them.

The Back Design

The back features a weathered stone lion inspired by the Lion of Chaeronea, the monument associated with the Theban soldiers who fell at the Battle of Chaeronea in 338 BCE.

The seated lion represents dignity, vigilance, courage, and remembrance. Cracks across the stone reveal subtle Pride-colored pigment, suggesting histories and identities that could be concealed or damaged but never completely erased. Two overlapping shields at the monument’s base recall the loyalty of the paired warriors.

The inscription reads:

Together, the front and back transform the shirt into a wearable memorial connecting an ancient tradition of companionship with the life of a man persecuted because of whom he loved.

Why Alan Turing Belongs in the Company

Turing’s work helped establish the theoretical foundations of computing, advanced Allied cryptanalysis, contributed to early computer development, anticipated modern debates about artificial intelligence, and opened a new mathematical approach to biological pattern formation. His treatment under Britain’s former laws against homosexual acts also made his life an enduring reminder of the human cost of institutional prejudice.
