The Company of Remarkable Men No. 002 — Erick Martinez | LGBTQ+ History T-Shirt

A Voice for Diversity and Human Rights

Alexander Erick Martínez Ávila was born in Honduras on January 18, 1980. Trained as a journalist at the National Autonomous University of Honduras, he used communication, public advocacy, and political organizing to call attention to discrimination, violence, HIV-related issues, and the rights of LGBTQ+ Hondurans.

Martínez Ávila worked with Asociación Kukulcán, an organization defending the rights and wellbeing of LGBTQ+ people in Honduras. He also helped found the Movimiento de Diversidad en Resistencia, or Diversity Movement in Resistance, which brought LGBTQ+ advocacy into the country’s broader movement for democracy, social justice, and political reform.

In 2012, Martínez Ávila became a congressional pre-candidate for the Francisco Morazán department in the internal elections of Honduras’s Liberty and Refoundation Party, commonly known as LIBRE. His candidacy represented an important effort to bring an openly gay voice and the concerns of LGBTQ+ Hondurans directly into national political life.

Martínez Ávila disappeared on May 5, 2012, only days after publicly announcing his candidacy during a May Day demonstration. His body was discovered two days later outside Tegucigalpa. He was 32 years old. Although his life was taken, his work remains part of the continuing struggle for LGBTQ+ visibility, political representation, freedom of expression, and human rights in Honduras.

The Front Design

The front features a large illustrated portrait of Erick Martínez Ávila rendered in the refined archival style of The Company of Remarkable Men. Weathered gold, ivory, blue, violet, and muted Pride-colored accents give the portrait the appearance of a preserved commemorative engraving.

Beneath the portrait appear his name, the years 1980–2012, and the identification “Honduran · Journalist & LGBTQ+ Advocate.” The designation “Civic Life · Profile No. 002” places Martínez Ávila within Walt & Pete’s continuing record of remarkable LGBTQ+ people whose courage influenced public and civic life.

The Back Design

The back presents a formal profile medallion surrounded by symmetrical branches with restrained Pride-colored leaves. Its central declaration—“Founded the Diversity Resistance Movement”—recognizes Martínez Ávila’s role in building an organized LGBTQ+ voice within Honduras’s wider resistance movement.

Supporting inscriptions honor his advocacy for LGBTQ+ and HIV-related human rights and his selection as a congressional pre-candidate. Ornamental lines, archival typography, botanical scrollwork, and the closing phrase “In Every Field · Across Every Generation” connect his individual story to the larger, international history of LGBTQ+ courage.

More than a portrait shirt, this design is a wearable historical record honoring a journalist and advocate who sought to transform visibility into political representation.

The Company of Remarkable Men recognizes LGBTQ+ people whose courage, leadership, creativity, and service changed public life. Their lives remind us that we have always been present—and that we have always been in good company.
