Dominican Bayahibe Rose Pride T-Shirt | ORGULLO Botanical Laurel Wreath Tee

Celebrate survival, conservation, and the courage to live authentically with the Dominican Bayahibe Rose ORGULLO T-Shirt. This culturally inspired design transforms one of the Caribbean’s rarest flowers into a classical botanical laurel crown illuminated by the colors of LGBTQ+ Pride.

The Story of the Bayahibe Rose

The Bayahibe rose—scientifically known as Leuenbergeria quisqueyana and formerly classified as Pereskia quisqueyana—is the national flower of the Dominican Republic. Unlike a conventional rose, it is an extraordinary leafy cactus with succulent stems, oval green leaves, protective spines, and delicate pink flowers.

The species is native to the Bayahibe region of the Dominican Republic and is considered critically endangered. Habitat degradation and environmental pressures have made its conservation especially important. Its rarity and ability to survive in a demanding coastal environment make the Bayahibe rose a powerful symbol of endurance and the responsibility to protect vulnerable life. The Meaning of the Laurel Wreath

In this design, two Bayahibe rose branches cross and intertwine at the lower center before sweeping upward into a broad, open laurel crown. The classical laurel wreath has long represented honor, achievement, dignity, and perseverance.

Reconstructed from the Dominican Republic’s rare national flower, the wreath takes on a deeper contemporary meaning. Its crossed stems represent solidarity and lives strengthened through connection. Its protective spines symbolize resilience and the defense of vulnerable communities. The open crown suggests welcome, possibility, and a future in which everyone has space to flourish.

The wreath also reflects a shared principle between conservation and Pride: what is rare, vulnerable, or misunderstood deserves protection—not erasure.

How the Wreath Incorporates Pride

The Bayahibe rose’s naturally pink blossoms remain prominent throughout the design. Attached flowers and buds introduce brick red, burnt orange, antique gold, botanical green, heritage blue, violet, dusty rose, and vibrant pink.

Instead of forming rigid rainbow stripes, the Pride colors emerge naturally along the leafy cactus branches. Each blossom remains distinct while contributing to the unified crown, reflecting the individuality and interconnected strength of the LGBTQ+ community.

Deep green foliage and weathered stems provide contrast for the brighter pigments, while visible spines preserve the plant’s unusual botanical identity. The result is a Pride design that feels organic, dignified, and culturally meaningful.

The Meaning of ORGULLO

Beneath the wreath appears the Spanish word ORGULLO, meaning “pride.” It can communicate self-respect, dignity, satisfaction, and confidence in who one is. The Real Academia Española includes self-esteem and dignity among the meanings and associations of the word. Real Academia Española

Within the LGBTQ+ community, ORGULLO represents the rejection of shame, the affirmation of identity, and the right to live openly and authentically. Paired with the endangered Bayahibe rose, the word becomes a declaration that identity, community, and vulnerable lives deserve visibility, respect, and protection.

Rendered like a late-19th-century botanical plate, the artwork combines engraved linework, matte gouache, watercolor variation, and subtle archival texture. Coordinated versions feature Caribbean-turquoise and antique-gold lettering for dark shirts or deep wine-burgundy lettering for light shirts.

Why You’ll Love It

  • A meaningful expression of Dominican Pride: The design combines the Dominican Republic’s national flower with the Spanish word ORGULLO.
