The Peanut: Honoring George Washington Carver

Celebrate the agricultural legacy of George Washington Carver through a richly detailed woven wall tapestry inspired by early twentieth-century botanical charts and agricultural experiment-station publications.

At the center of the composition, the peanut plant—Arachis hypogaea—is shown above and below the soil, revealing its leaves, yellow flowers, roots and underground pods. Six accompanying specimen studies examine the peanut’s shell, kernels, foliage, flower and root system. An ornamental Arts and Crafts–inspired border completes the design in a restrained palette of parchment, sage green, tobacco brown, ochre and brick red.

The inscription honors Carver’s agricultural research and his associations with Iowa State Agricultural College and Tuskegee Institute.

A Legacy of Cultivation and Conservation

George Washington Carver was an agricultural scientist, educator, artist and conservationist whose work helped farmers improve depleted soil through crop rotation and alternative crops such as peanuts, sweet potatoes and legumes.

Carver became Iowa State’s first African American student and later its first African American faculty member. He earned his bachelor’s degree in 1894 and master’s degree in 1896 before joining Tuskegee Institute, where he directed agricultural research and developed practical educational bulletins for farmers.

Among his best-known publications was How to Grow the Peanut and 105 Ways of Preparing It for Human Consumption. His work emphasized agricultural self-sufficiency, soil restoration, and the practical application of scientific knowledge for farmers with limited resources.

Woven as a Heritage Textile

Unlike a conventional printed poster, the artwork is permanently woven into the fabric using colored threads. The resulting texture gives the botanical illustration the warmth and character of a vintage educational textile or historic commemorative wall hanging.

Display it in a study, library, office, classroom, kitchen, or collected interior. It is particularly meaningful for admirers of Black history, agricultural science, botanical illustration, Iowa history, and historically inspired home décor.
